Where can I compare highway fatality rates by states, region or MPO?

The Federal Highway Administration has a Roadway Safety Data Dashboards website that allows a user to examine fatality data using many different factors.

The different information that can be selected include:

  • National, national sub-region (North, South, Mid-America, West), state, or Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).
  • Fatalities, fatality rates, or vehicle miles travelled (VMT)
  • Crash Factor Focus Area
    • Roadway departure
    • Pedestrian/ bicycle
    • Intersection
  • Type of collision
  • Persons involved
  • Location and setting

Data can be shown by year, percent change over time or rolling average. It can be displayed in different formats and the output can be downloaded to be used in reports or saved into a spreadsheet.

As an example, the graph shows fatalities on collector and local (by classification, not ownership) highways in New York State from 2011-2015). Note that single-vehicle crashes not colliding with another vehicle dominate!
