What is the width of a bike lane?

The width depends upon whether there is parking or curbs. Extra width is needed on long or steep upgrades to allow for extra wander by the bicyclists.

  • Road with no curb - 4 feet minimum
  • Road with curb - 5  feet minimum
  • Extra width to account for parking - 7 feet

The Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center has a very good page answering basic questions about Bike Lanes.
