What traffic control is required in a nightime work zone?

Reflective clothing and lighting of flagger stations are required in nighttime work zones.

Reflective Clothing

As of December 31, 2011, all persons within the road right-of-way are required to wear apparel that meets the Performance Class 2 or 3 requirements of ANSI/ISEA 107-2004 publication titled American National Standard for High-Visibility Apparel and Headwear. Flaggers, workers, inspectors, and crossing guards, are required to comply with these requirements. When working at night, flaggers should wear a Class 3 high visibility garment for night flagging.

Illumination of Flagger Stations

The MUTCD Standard states that “Except in emergencies, temporary lighting shall be provided at all flagger stations."

When work is scheduled for nighttime, the MUTCD recommends providing enhanced traffic controls such as increased advanced warning distances and tapers; and temporary roadway lighting, flashing lights, illuminated signs and floodlights. Additionally, “consideration should be given to providing additional lights and retroreflective markings for workers, work vehicles, and equipment.” Also: “Consideration should be given to stationing uniformed law enforcement officers and lighted patrol cars at night work locations where there is a concern that high speeds or impaired drivers might result in undue risks for workers or other drivers.”
