What is mastic pavement repair material, and what is it used for?
Mastic repair material is another tool in the pavement maintenance toolkit and is experiencing growing use in New York State. Mastic is a hot-poured, polymer modified liquid asphalt, that is pre-mixed with light weight aggregate. It can be used to repair highly deteriorated pavements (both asphalt and concrete), where the distress is too advanced for conventional crack sealing, and too limited to warrant repaving or other rehabilitation treatments such as mill and fill.
These highly distressed areas can include large cracks (greater than 1 inch wide and 1 inch deep), and localized areas of extensive alligator cracking. Initial national standards have been developed (ASTM D8260-20) and should continue to evolve. Mastic is available under NYS OGS Contract Award 23250, Group 31555 Liquid Bituminous Materials, Lot 7 Joint & Crack Sealer and Mastic Repair Material.
