What are signs of burnout and are there any suggested coping techniques?
Signs of burnout:
- Sadness, depression, or apathy
- Becoming cynical or critical at work
- Easily frustrated, finding it hard to concentrate
- Blaming others, irritability towards co-workers
- Isolation or disconnection from others
- Tired, exhausted or overwhelmed, lacking the energy to be productive
- Dragging yourself to work, having trouble getting started
Coping techniques like taking breaks, eating healthy foods, exercising, and talking with co-workers or loved ones can help prevent or reduce burnout.
Some self-care techniques are:
- Limit working hours to no longer than 12-hour shifts
- Evaluate your options and seek support, talk to family, friends, supervisors, and teammates about your feelings and experiences
- Practice breathing and relaxation techniques
- Take care of yourself, maintain a healthy diet, get adequate sleep, and exercise often
- Know that it is okay to draw boundaries and say “no”
- Avoid or limit caffeine and use of alcohol
