Description
Creating safer, more welcoming streets for everyone, whether traveling by car, truck, bus, bike, wheelchair, or on foot is the goal of the newest workshop from the NYS LTAP Center – Cornell Local Roads Program.
Well Rounded Roads takes a broad look at how communities can improve local roadways to serve all users, not just drivers. Many streets lack basic safety features like sidewalks, bike accommodations, or curb ramps, and that's ok, as there are many other simple options we can use to increase the safety of all our road users. Often drivers encourage fast, close traffic that puts vulnerable users at risk. This workshop explores how thoughtful planning and design can change that.
Participants will learn:
- The basics of traffic law and crash data related to pedestrians and cyclists
- Strategies like shoulder widening
- The importance of comprehensive plans, policies, education, and enforcement
