How far apart should signs be placed along the highway?

The NYS Supplement to the National MUTCD states that “sign installations should be at least 200 feet apart where possible (Section 2A.16).” Signs may need to be spread apart, even more, to allow drivers to read the sign and properly respond. When signs are too close together, it is more likely that the driver will not be able to read them all. The distance in feet between the signs should be 5 to 7 times the speed limit. Click here to see the table showing recommended spacing. Note that the speed should be the higher of the speed limit or the 85th percentile speed.
