Fog Lines

Question:

Do we have to maintain fog lines (white edge lines) once placed?

Answer:

The decision to place any line should be based upon the need for communication with the public, improvements and highway safety, and requirements of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).  Lines are covered in Part 3, Markings.

Edge lines are covered in Section 3B.09 Edge Line Pavement Markings. An important reminder from the first Support note of the section is that

Edge line markings provide visual references to guide road users during adverse weather and visibility conditions.

The use of a sign, marking, or signal should be based upon an engineering study or engineering judgement. The removal of a sign, marking, or signal is still a decision which should be supported by the same concepts. As per section 1D.09, Unnecessary traffic control devices should be removed.
