Flagger Training or Flagger Certification Class

Question: Does the NYSLTAP Center – Cornell Local Roads Program provide a Flagger Training or Flagger Certification class?

Answer:

NYSLTAP-CLRP does not offer just a flagging class at this time. What we do have is a Work Zone Traffic Control workshop that has a section on flagging. We have done requested sessions but those are limited based upon time and budget.

While flagger certification is not a requirement in New York State, all flaggers need to be trained. This is not just a requirement of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) but is required on state and federal work. Anyone working in traffic needs to be trained to understand the importance of proper traffic control and the dangers associated with being out in traffic. Any training done should be documented to help reduce liability to the agency.

What we do have available are many resources to help including pocket guides for flagging and work zone, an online tutorial, and other resources.
