Are "Child with Autism" signs allowed and if so, what are the rules for placing them?

A local resident has requested that I install a “Child with Autism” sign in their neighborhood. Am I allowed to place this type of sign? If they are allowed, what are the standards, rules, and recommendations regarding the placement and instillation of these signs?

They are allowed but there are specific conditions for their use:

  1. The child with autism is under the age of 18;
  2. The average daily traffic volume is less than 2,000 vehicles;
  3. The speed limit is 35mph or less; and
  4. The highway is residential in nature.

The warning plaque “Child With Autism” (NYW11-2P) shall not be used alone and may be used to supplement the Pedestrian (W11-2). Placement should be in accordance with the placement of the Pedestrian (W11-2). Also, while it is not specifically in the standard, we recommend that you add a date to remove the sign.

You can find the recommendations and specifications for the use and placement of these signs in a NYSDOT administrative rule amendment letter which you can download here.
