What are the changes to the Professional Development Hour (PDH) requirements for professional engineers and surveyors?
Recent changes by the New York State Department of Education (NYS DOE) have changed some of the requirements for continuing education of professional engineers and surveyors. More details on the requirements can be found on the NYS DOE website. Here is a review of a couple of significant changes.
Ethics Class
There is now a requirement to have at least a one hour session covering professional ethics during each registration period. Both courses and educational activities are acceptable.
Professional Service
Up to nine (9) Educational Activities PDHs for professional service on committees or task forces that are related to professional practice. For every two hours or deliberation, a licensee may earn up to one PDH. These PDHs must be certified in writing!

- Courses
A minimum of 18 hours of continuing education must be completed in courses for professional engineers and a minimum of 16 hours of continuing education must be completed in courses for land surveyors. All 36 hours for professional engineers or 24 hours for land surveyors may be completed through acceptable courses. - Educational Activities
A maximum of 18 hours may be in educational activities for professional engineers and a maximum of 8 hours may be in educational activities for land surveyors.
